All XIV is doing is giving the option to solo the MSQ and then solo challenges with things like Deep Dungeon but those have been there since it was first introduced. The island was solo and they've said next iteration will be something we can have group involvement with. What they're doing is adding the element of choice, but the option to play with others (outside of something like a solo duty during MSQ) is still there.

Also, as someone who has played MMOs since the late 90s and has seen all kinds of styles, MMO just means we're all together at the same time in a persistent world. Early on EQ era MMOs tried to force grouping. As time went on, MMOs transitioned more to a model where players could group by choice. And those have been the more successful entries.
