Didn't seem any more forced than any other character's job changes over previous expansions to me. Like Thancred going from a stealth recon expert to a tank because....we needed a tank for Trusts and that's about it.

Thancred becoming a GNB was a gigachad move. He's done playing now he wants to protecc (fits ShB theme with Rhyne). And he couldnt use magic anymore so he fought with aether infused bullets. It makes so much sense and not forced at all because the lore setup began in ARR.

He took up the skill before he went to the First though – his tutor is a Bozjan Hrothgar and IIRC it's said or implied that they met while Thancred was doing reconnaissance in Ilsabard.
