Relics were meant to be timesinks and grindy from the start. It was always this way until EW. You can argue whatever you want but that is what they were meant to be.
In EW the devs decided to unmake the game from every last bit of mmorpg and dregs of previous designs to suit the zoomer mindset of 0 commitment and instant reward.
Will they do it again? Most likely because you can't go back now that they have done it once because the metrics are all that matters now and good and interesting design is not allowed
