I enjoyed the prologue of FFXVI, I thought they were going to actually do something different, and the tone was incredible, but then the wheels started falling off almost immediately after. Side quests that were FFXIV style, main story quests that were straight up side quests (I HATE YOU MID), political intrigue that was essentially meaningless because big alien god boss, anime romances, awful female characters, combat that was pointlessly complex (all the fancy combos only work against enemies that you don't need to do the fancy combos???). Oh yea, the 'spectacle' that everyone praises, yea, that's called watching a movie. The boss fights were just long quick time events. Yuck.

Hey, at least it's better than XIII though, not that that's saying much.

I don't hate it as much as it sounds like, but I expect so much more from a mainline entry.

Agree with a lot of this. I really was enjoying some of the darker, more serious tone and story beats. But then as you said it just unravelled into typical ridiculousness by the end, and I found the end of the game to be pretty much nonsense.

I was okay doing the side quests the first time, but they were largely very boring game-play wise. I suffered through them as I liked the characters enough - but a lot of what they had you do was dull. They should have cut a good portion of these and made a few more meaningful quests instead. As they are, they make me not really want to do a 2nd playthrough as much.
