In alot of other games where you need to farm currency to get anything over a number of days. Not saying its a good approach, as I have said many times I would like events to be longer and have more earnable items including past rewards (Rather then justs ticking them up on the cash shop*), but it feels like currently they do approach events purposely trying not to invoke FOMO.

Thats not to say its absent from the game at all, I would love if we could play past event missions somehow, and fear of loosing your house due to not logging in is painful (Though more symptom of how bad housing has been handled in FFXIV then anything else.) It sucks and it should always be criticized, but so long as the aim is to make money almost every online game will try it in some shape or form.

But those other games bring back the rewards... You cant really unironically believe that removing the rewards and selling them is better than being able to earn them no matter when you start playing.
