Everyone who plays on a console - and they are a significant chunk of the players - manage just fine without being able to use any mods.

Should all mods somehow cease functioning all at once - which is unlikely in the extreme to ever happen - then I am sure there would be a noticable drop in players, but I am also sure the game would survive handily.
It's not just mods. It's also the community created resources. Who will keep playing the game if all FF14 Discords disappeared suddenly? Almost no one is playing the game because of the game. They are playing it because of what the community has created. Just think of content like Baldesion Arsenal. Almost no one would ever do it if the Discord dies. Or Savage. No one would do it if there are no guides. We owe far more gratitude to the community than to the developers.

nope, I think you are wrong. people play the game because of the game, and thats how a community forms. the community did not create the game.

    Agreed.

As hard as this is for some people to believe for whatever reason, a ton of people genuinely just...like the game. They enjoy playing it. Those people are probably going to keep playing it unless mods make it unplayable, which is unlikely. Mods being removed wouldn't affect a lot of people. And of those it affected, many of them would keep playing it, they just might be bummed about losing their mods. Like I was bummed about not having an Exploration Zone this expansion. Yet here I am, still playing the game and still finding things I enjoy in it.

You are mostly wrong - the community exists because people are playing the game, not the other way around.
But be that as it may - how is FFXIV different from any other MMO in this regard? Players use community-made information for all of them - and for plenty of single-player games as well.
