Well, it worked for G'raha when he was the Crystal Exarch, and he had his tail like that for a century.

As a kitty player myself though, all I can say is, ouch.

What outfit was his tail missing? Was it the robe it could have been under or something skin-tight where it just vanished due to ineptness?

His Exarch outfit lacked a tail and as he wore his hood up for much of ShB, it completely disguised the fact he was a miqo'te (or mystel) so people just assumed he was a partially crystallized hyur (or hume) - Crystarium gossip though mentioned that people could swear they saw the hint of a tail peeking out under his robes, and that he apparently hid it by wrapping it around his waist like a belt.

Of course I lack a citation for that, and in the end he stopped hiding his appearence after Mount Gulg anyway, so that particular cat is now long out of the bag (pun intended).
