That sounds like a bug. I've never had to do anything but go to Edit and then Save and had no further issues. If it happens again you might want to report that.You have to do weird stuff to make it work properly sometimes, last time i changed my weapon glam i had to dissociate my glam plate from my job and associate it one more time before updating the portrait since only updating gave me the default plate for some reason.
So to prevent this kind of inconvenience they really should just make plate unaffected by any gear change unless you chose to edit them yourself, i really struggle to understand why they chose not to do that.
