Their first relic, sure. They had been playing content before the patch released and had the tomestones ready because that's what many players do before the release of every patch.

What about the second, the fifth, the seventeenth relics, though? The relic steps cost 1500. Tomestones cap at 2000. They would have had to do something to earn the tomestones for their additional relics. It's a rare player that only gets the relic for one job.

    Boom problem solved.

Another idea: Have Criterion drop the twines and such you need to upgrade gear (with a weekly lockout), and there you go.
Adding a full set for each role would contribute to inventory bloat not to mention people getting upset when the model they like is for a job different from the one they want to use it on. (not trying to say it's a bad idea or that I'm against it, it's just something that needs to be considered)

They did add the cosmetic gear as a reward because that has the benefit of being used on any job at any level. Should that be harder to grind?

Granted most players aren't going to do Criterion but it would be interesting to see the result if SE were to poll the players that do to see if they would prefer role locked or pure cosmetic sets as rewards.

Definitely I see adding the twines as a good idea for Criterion that shouldn't raise objections, especially if they're on a weekly lockout.

Yeah, I think every time I have bought one of the weapons this time around, I just had what I needed. I have never gone out of my way to actually get one specifically.

Just passively earning the tomestones from doing whatever other random thing?

I must say that this screenshot didn't aged well

Maybe, but the loudest simps I've seen are literally all wow refugees. Maybe we can call them by a new name: WoW BPD refugees, since it's pretty obvious the only reason they defend FF14 like so is because they had a bad breakup with WoW.

Ironically the people I know who are most upset with the current state of FF14 are the ones who have never touched WoW and got into it in 2.x/3.x.

I did exactly that. I logged in, did the Hildibrand quests that didn't really last that long (I even watched the cutscenes), and got my 'Majestic' relic weapon instantly with tomes I already had. I remember the days when getting a relic step done felt like I had accomplished something. I felt none of that satisfaction. There was no joy or feeling of accomplishment from completing this 'step'. Only pure indifference. I had done nothing but check a box on a list of things to dump tomes into. Perhaps if the effort required to get it wasn't the exact opposite of 'majestic', it would have feel more like an accomplishment.

That’s me (well 1.0 but still)

I still think this isn’t a WOW player problem, this is an UWU “spamming diagnosis while I look at my shisui cat girl is my playstyle” problem, which is not the WOW players

The issue is, and always will be, people that pick up an MMO and then don't want it to be an MMO.

MMO's exist as a social game, and it seems like this new generation of players struggle with even the basics of social interactions, therefore avoid any and all content that requires you to communicate with another living person.

The sad reality is that those people get catered to, and more and more of the MMO feeling gets sucked out of the game.
Right now i feel like I'm playing a single player game with a multiplayer lobby built into cities, And that is certainly not what FFXIV felt like in 2.0 when i started playing, The world was alive back then.

Those "rewards" you speak of are materia, 1 framer kit, 1 orchestrion scroll and 1 mount. Savage version has materia and 1 housing item.

People want gear because the content is savage equivalent, and parties are often enforcing 650 ilvl. So why should there be no gear rewards? Do you think it will break devs' sacred formula of gearing or what?

Do you think that people would still run raids like they do today if they removed gearing and only left mount, minion and a scroll? I hope you're not that naive.

Then people will be happy. Raids do have weekly lockout and they're fine, what about it? Why do you think it wouldn't work for criterion? Just put some upgrade mats to criterion and participation will sky rocket.

At the end of the day a lot of content fall by the wayside because the sacred gear treadmill only incentivize Savage raids and hunt trains (or Expert roulette if you want to be slow)
