A marketing event will be mostly marketing. What a shocker.

Rich people do strange things because they can't think of anything better to do with their money.
Some even purchase multiple licenses for the same game just so they'll have multiple accounts to use to troll the game's forums.
You sound quite unwell. Do you seek to be yet another reply guy? Oh, what am I saying, you already are.

There are certainly other things to do. But the whole purpose of events like Fanfest is to build hype for the next expansion. It's all marketing. Acting like it's some big gotcha moment to point it out is just lazy.

They have events, meet-ups, merch sales. Just like any convention for any other media property. Plus for a lot of attendees they'll be visiting a town/state/country they rarely, if ever, go to so that in itself is an experience. The supposed gotcha is like saying "imagine going to Disneyland just to have merch advertised to you" and is completely missing the point of going to something like this. Which isn't surprising that the social aspect eludes them considering how they spend their time.
