Totally agree that the behavior described in the OP is wrong - no question.

Though have to admit that I am questioning whether my occasional penchant toward trading minions I don't need, or food items, to newbies (followed by a PM welcoming them to the game) could be misconstrued now.....

Depends on how you do it. I'll plant myself near an Aetheryte and shout that I'm giving away items to new players (though I've also given them to not so new players that have asked). That way it's up to the player to approach me if they want rather than me intruding when they prefer to be left alone.

I will say if multiple players have been bothered by your style of gift-giving, you probably would heard from a GM by now. Even if you're technically not doing something wrong, they'll contact a player if they get enough reports and suggest trying a different approach.

Yeah - I mean, the only time I do this is when I'm at one of the starting point areas. I generally just initiate a trade and drop them a quick PM with a simple "welcome to the game" and explain that the food item is a little EXP boost to use in battle or that the minion is one I already have. If they respond, great - if not, that's fine too. I don't generally hang around afterward.

So I've generally assumed that, so long as I'm not pushy about it, it's acceptable.
