Well, perhaps anima is a viable alternative to exp loss. Of course, some might say that's too light or too heavy as well. I'm just basing my experiences off FFXI, which may be a grevious error in judgement on my part but FFXI parties are some of the best MMO experiences I've ever had.

It goes to the development team to dissect them and see what made them so glorious. Perhaps death penalties had absolutely nothing to do with their success. It just irks me that I feel nothing when I eat dirt.

Some say dying itself is a deterrant to poor playing. I would disagree, I just flippantly swing at it if I think I have a chance to kill it and die if I don't. I would be much more cautious and therefore more excited if I just barely won (or lost.)

Well... I've had some time to really think about this at this point... Currently I do a lot of solo play, so my points are very hard earned. Not that I mind. But I did once play an mmo where I was part of a group, and it had a really large xp death loss. I was (still am! ) a healer, so between that and the xp loss a teammate would get if I failed, maybe that's why I have a healthy respect for not dying, even if the penelty is no longer there. I was really glad to play games without xp loss, so I never really thought about where my motivations came from. I suppose if someone never had that penalty, they might not ever developed a respect for it.

That doesn't mean that I want a points loss penalty, but maybe I understand better where you are coming from.

    Edit; double posted:

Um, I liked some of her posts. I tend to agree with what she has to say. She just needed to tone down inflamatory comments. Which she is trying to do.

The SP/XP loss doesn't have to be that severe, even the slightest loss will be enough to deter people from mindless throwing their lives at mobs and think tactically. Also can do away with the level loss part that came from XI, can't count how many times our mages died so much in the EG only to watch some delevel as much as 1-2 times due to people not listening.

XI had a 10% exp loss but with furnishings and other means you could reduce it significantly and thats where I think XIV should settle.

    From FFXI wiki:
A player who is Level 1, 2, or 3 does not lose any EXP.
    ■ A player who is Level 4-24 loses what would have been 10% of their max EXP for that level.
    ■ A player who is Level 25-67 loses what would have been 8% of their max EXP for that level.
    ■ A player who is Level 68 or higher loses 2400 EXP.
    ■ Being revived with a Raise or Reraise effect will restore a certain percentage of the EXP lost. If you had lost a job level upon dying, it is possible to regain it upon being Raised. (See "Experience Points Loss by Level" below.)
    ■ EXP loss per K.O. may never exceed 2400 under any circumstances. If Moghancement: Experience is active, it may never exceed 2280
2280 xp/sp in this game wouldn't be all that devastating if you think about it. Players will however start playing smart and deaths will be less common. Also factor in the Raise to reduce XP/SP loss even further and you can bring it down to 300 XP/SP loss with a max tier raise.

I don't see how this would cause alot of troubles to people, this coming from a guy who ALWAYS dies in XIV.
