Idk I'm playing Honkai star rail right now and it slaps. Dialogues are fully voiced and the events are rewarding and fun. You can replay big events you missed which is something I haven't seen any other game let you do.

There's definite FOMO, but thats true even in xiv or well any game to some capacity.

Star Rail is an oddity. For a Free game, it's way above the standard. Their pre-rendered cutscenes are amazing, the music is really good, and the MSQ is fully VA'd. The battle system is great, and definite proof that turn-based combat still has a place in modern gaming beyond just SMT games and retro-styled games ala Octopath Traveler. The story of the game itself is really well done, and the characters super charming. It definitely puts games such as Scarlet and Violet to shame.

At the same time, the game is tiny if you compare it to anything like God of War, RE4 (either), The Jedi EA games and yes, XIV/XV/XVI. FOMO isn't nowhere near as bad as Genshin, but I just missed on the Museum event because I just wasn't gonna rush through the MSQ to unlock it, as playing it at my own pace is part of what has made the game so enjoyable to me. Characters that are not unique are super generic, and animations are really stiff sometimes. Oleg's lips never even move, and the deeper you look, the more little things like these start to pop up, though arguably nothing is deal breaking really.

Star Rail should be a case study as to how Free to Play games don't have to be bad or unplayable unless you drop money into them, but I don't think it really compares too well with XIV, but this does come to mind: All Gold and Purple quests in Star Rail are fully voiced. To that, and I've been saying this for some time, all Alliance and Normal Raids should be fully voiced in XIV. We don't need VA in every quest in XIV, but in Star Rail, Purple quests are the companion quests, and they get the proper care they deserve. Alliance and Normal Raids are a big part of the side content in XIV, and the lack of Voice Acting just sucks. Bozja would have benefited so much from it.

But yeah, Star Rail is surprisingly really good.
