That is not true. It has for very long been used in a derogatory way, which is why many japanese rpg devs do not like having their games called JRPGs at all. Yoship even did an interview on this exact point, it's very interesting to read.

Overall the term is falsely used because it doesnt mean what it says. It's not even a useful term. We have games branded as jrpgs that share very little game play wise with each other. At times it's based on aesthetic, at times it's based on gameplay, at times it's based on region of origin. Whatever the user of the term wants to imply (many times negatively, like we even have in this thread).
