And my issue with Emet is not believing whether he did a thing, but what we are supposed to make of a small amount of contradictory information that nobody could naturally come across by playing FFXIV or reading supplementary resources for FFXIV.

What I meant is, couldn't the writers at least show venat that she did something that "fortify our defense"? Idk maybe have her ordering around her followers? Defending some people but failed? To symbolize that she did try to help? Instead what we got is straight up her not bothering with anything.

It didn't matter if she blostered their defense if the ancients couldn't handle their sufferings. Without the sundering, they were just delaying the inevitable.
