Hell, the Echo itself is pretty much mental time travel in a sense due to being able to see into people's memories and reliving past events.

1.0 Echo usage leaned more into actually being present in past events, Ul'dah's time travel opening being very canon and Gridania's being mentioned in passing. Limsa Lominsa even had a whole full CGI cutscene where Y'shtola uses her mysterious powers to send us back to the present before a tidal wave crashes onto the ship. The city storylines in 1.0 revolved around going back in time and interacting with people in both the past and present to solve a mystery in each one. Limsan PCs got to interact with Rosensthal before his fall when he was still Sthalmann, Gridanian PCs got to interact with the original Yda, and Ul'dahn PCs got to be a part of Minfilia's origin story and interact with young(er) F'lhaminn and her then boyfriend.
Though it still remains to be seen how much of 1.0 and the Echo powers used were canon for a WoL from back then, we know that a lot that went down in the time travel cutscenes are still canon. The Echo may not act the same as it did then for us now, but I'd like to think that they can still have it do that for future content that isn't written as confusing as 1.0 was.

My headcanon is that the one having the Echo flashbacks from 1.0 died when Dalamud fell. Because it IS canon that there were multiple Warriors of Light in 1.0, and that our PC is the last one of them.Though it still remains to be seen how much of 1.0 and the Echo powers used were canon for a WoL from back then, we know that a lot that went down in the time travel cutscenes are still canon. I think Louisoix begged the Twelve for Help but they didn's answer him. He teleported the Warriors of Light away to save them but then Hydaelyn gave him his answer. The Warriors of Light could hear her and so they prayed and while they did so Louisoix became a Primal and the Warriors of Light got sacrificed the same time. That's why everyone told us, they cannot remember the Face of the Warriors of Light and they was never seen again.
Someone call the Forum Police! Because I wrote passive aggressively that DT looks not good. Oh how right I was!

They probably stopped doing this because it was VERY confusing and frustrating, by the way. You can look up every cutscene in 1.0, and I recommend watching Gridania's story especially, because if you don't know that's what's happening it's completely incomprehensible. And honestly, even with that knowledge it's still way more trouble than it's worth.1.0 Echo usage leaned more into actually being present in past events, Ul'dah's time travel opening being very canon and Gridania's being mentioned in passing.
