There are such things as "good" challenges and "unnecessary" challenges. People do things to try to alleviate the "unnecessary" type. Here are some examples:

Good challenge - Completing the quests required to get a chocobo (you get a sense of accomplishment and reward for finishing)
Unnecessary challenge - having to walk from Ul'Dah to Gridania (you just spent 2 hours of your time on this and accomplished very little, unless you take personal pride in making the journey)

Similarly, in your driving example, it can be mentally exhausting for people to drive 400 miles. In the real world, you would weigh that against the pros and cons of alternatives. If you are able to afford it (which is a challenge in itself), then you fly. If you are unfamiliar with this concept of "airplanes," think of it like an airship. Or teleporting.
