Laziness has nothing to do with it, but if you need to tell yourself that to feel smug, feel free. I and others in my LS use the airship and chocobos in order to save anima for quests and leves. Usually there are about six or seven others using the airship at the same time. Reduced anima costs, etc. don't stop people from using those features, they just offer a greater variety of choices.

How is teleporting any less "playing the game" than taking an airship?

But they're quickly becoming less important. But I'm sure most of this will be fine by the time we get the 2.0 world. Long as the teleport points are reasonably placed.
