A wiki?! Back in my day we just had a Prima guide that said that Humes make good ninja because they look good in pajamas.
You had to rely on more seasoned linkshell members on how to do things and wild rumors would spread on the Valkurm Dunes about the spawning criteria of the Sea Horror and tales about ferries dropping off 20 dead bodies onto the docks of Selbina.
Altana save you if you DID want to play ninja because you would have to camp for hours for a rare NM for you BIS head, feet, body, and hands for many levels and even if you fight off the horde of treasure hunters for the claim, you’re not guaranteed the drop (though I think they fixed that?). All your spells cost items to use and the scrolls themselves sold for millions of gil.
Abyssea wouldn’t be a thing for years and you had to grind goblins and beetles in increasingly exotic locations for hours in order to level up.
The devs probably don’t do it anymore, but they gave no hints on how to do anything and would regularly punish players for playing jobs or fighting bosses “wrong”. They were surprised but eventually supportive of things like SAM becoming a DPS when it was made to be a tank class or NIN becoming a tank when it was meant to be a DPS, but on the other end they nerfed manaburn parties and all the BLM became RNG because they didn’t like that. Or when a group of people became physically ill fighting Pandaemonium Warden wrong for hours upon hours and they nerfed it after bad media coverage.
I wonder if they ever made Puppetmaster worth playing. I don’t know if it was meant to be a solo class because it seemed sort of like it but their own power was weak, they had a C in their main weapon type, and BST was much better at soloing things. It never seemed to have a role in a party either. I got it up to level 60 or so I’m the hopes it would get better but it didn’t really and I got nervous about spending time and effort on something that people might not even invite me into Dynamis on so I abandoned it.
