This worked out pretty well in PSO2, but in the end they just made the Scion classes which most people ended up using and they did not allow you to select a sub class when you mained them since they were complete on their own.
Tbf I feel like they just didn't feel like trying to balance the scion and non scion classes. NGS remaking all the classes and keeping the subclass system was nice
