    uhhh to me the key words that I like are... Our "FIRST" graphical update, meaning there will be more, its not "THE" graphical update. So I'm glad graphics are going to continue evolving with the rest of the game, as they should.... They are vital just like engaging gameplay.

    Its possible they are laying a framework to standardize this procedure in the future as needed, or updating the engine as far as not immediate aesthetics are concerned. I would welcome that. why wouldn't they look at the engine if they are already messing with the graphics.

    In a sense, I'm fairly sure that what they are doing already requires engine adjustments.

    If the engine could already handle and render truly metallic materials, they would've already done that as that thing isn't exactly bottlenecked by performance but by coding. That means they're integrating that functionality. i.e. adding PBR-type shaders, that's basically a partial under the hood overhaul by itself. Not sure how far that overhaul extends and how much they're replacing/adding in terms of code, but it isn't a minor thing.

    This is why the wait is so difficult. It could be a dud or a "meh, cool I guess" or have worthwhile and exciting far-reaching consequences both aesthetically and technically.

    I mean without seeing what they do with the body like hands and feet...the hair texture is nicer then the ones I've seen on the nexus and the skin shader beats reshade easily in my opinion and I have seen many examples of reshade presets. But that is me going off of just the faces and like you said...they at least adhere to the art style the game has going for it unlike most mods that look like skyrim ones. Just need to see how the environments hold up now bring on fanfest!

    I know the sample teaser that we got were just that...samples, so the actual thing may be subject to change in terms of looks, but I personally am fond of what they're doing with the faces so far. It's all nicely polished. But yeah I think Im more interested in the environs rework since they also shared some samples for adding more details and textures for world objects and grass and it looks good.

    Im just tired of seeing some of the modding communities....just personally uncanny face and model reworks that keep popping up in my twitter feed. I think people try so hard to ultra-beautify the game that it winds up looking stupid to me, but again this is just my opinion on the usual appearance mods. Just not a big fan of them.

    We also haven't seen everything working in tandem. Looking at the preliminary previews (this was in the early stages and basically just a test when we last saw it) in isolation is a whole different beast than seeing it all together.

    Better character model meshes (particularly faces) will mean both better animating and that the lighting will hit the planes of the face better and in a less jarring way.

    Better lighting will mean more natural hues in both the environment and on the characters as well as better shadows.

    Better shadow resolution, well... that speaks for itself.

    Better materials means the skin, the clothes, the armor, the eyes, the hair, will all reflect the lighting better and presumably also lighting from indirect sources like ambient glows in the environment or reflective surfaces. It also means that they could make environmental objects be more.. distinct? Right now, it feels like everything's lit the same way, but in real life, things don't all catch the light in a similar way. Some surfaces are rougher, some surfaces are smoother. Tree trunks and grass aren't the same material and thus don't behave the same way.

    It all compounds when you put it together, which is why I'm curious to see it all cooperating.

    My immediate thought is that parts of the graphics overhaul won’t be the models and textures we see but rather than the underlying rendering engineering lowering the game. If we look at the modern gaming industry, that would be things like DirectX 12 on Windows, newer/better anti-aliasing techniques like TAA and maybe even reconstruction techniques such as NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS. Likewise this could also mean newer formats for models and textures.

    I think we can all agree that some parts of the rendering engine are pretty bad and only hinder the art direction of the game. I’d like to see a huge overhaul in this area as it’ll make the overall experience nicer even if some of the improvements are subtle.
