i'm wondering how many people remember that we did have reasons to go to the other cities? it's funny to watch alot of people complain that their cities are dead after supporting the only reason i ever went to grid or limsa being removed.

do you remember recipes that needed guild or master support from the guilds?
do you remember having to go to the guild to purchase abilities?

these things forced people to go to other cities besides uldah, but everyone supported them being removed. don't act suprised now that you get what you asked for and it had unintended consequences.

i know i remember going to uldah and spending days there because guild support allowed me to complete higher level synths while grinding, but now that's been removed the whole reason to go there is gone.

outside of going to limsa or grid for farming i don't waste my time going there and a global shout isn't doing anything to change that.

Precisely why not being able to summon retainers outside your home city would be useful, course it'd only work if the wards were linked ...

This is the most common reason people IRL and IG huddle in masses, to feel they are a part of, to not be left out. Malls/theatres/parks are all empty these days because we have this freakish global communication ability that allows people to stay home and not find a way to the nearest gathering spot.

A lot of supplies are sold in town so we sit next to the seller to buy them. Additionally we need to sell our stuff to NPCs or put them up in wards or deal with our retainers... A lot easier if we are near them. This reflects the aspect that crafting is a 'city' event, which is why we are in the city.
This can be done in any city Ul'dah isn't the only one w/ npcs and wards. If you mean buying specific craft goods, then wouldn't it make more sense to be in the city with the guild your crafting for, or near the guilds in Ul'dah, in either case away from the mass of people around the adventurer's guild?

This also can be done in any city Ul'dah isn't the only one where players can interact.

The same could be said for Gridania, but not as much for Limsa Lominsa (no Primal Battles, Dungeons (DH, DH2, CC) are near Limsa Lominsa). So it was a 50/50 between Ul'Dah and Gridania... and Ul'Dah is a lot easier to navigate than Gridania (both cities and outlying areas), so it won.
This on the other hand is basically nail on the head, for now. Except that airships/teles aren't exactly hard to do.

True point, but i think alot of it had to do with we had less mode of travel (just the ferry and anima i believe, which SHOULD have been mildy sufficent, but i'm digressing.) and it was just a hassle to alot of us and we screamed to the high heavens to make it go away...now, we can travel much easier thanks to airships and chocobos, so perhaps a re-implementation of the old purchase abilites would help? Maybe not, but Ul'dah is so cluttered i just send tells to whoever is on my friends list that is bold enough to travel through it...and if they come across something of interest to me, i just pay them back the gil, and sleep in grid.

but the point is the game had something that gave people a reason to go to other cities. people cried it wasn't a good thing to have so it was removed. those same people are now complaining that there needs to be something to make people go to other cities. if they add something to make people leave uldah again people will just cry about it again because if forces the majority to do something that only the minority wants.

be careful what you ask for because you just might get it.

Yeah, it's either going to be a delicate balance or a complete cluster f$%k, i never complained much about traveling to limsa for blacksmithing, and i'll have an excuse to go back now to finish up armoring. As it was said, the commuinty isn't fully at fault, but they did change alot because we were the ones unhappy, hindsight being 20/20 i bet alot of people who complained are probably kicking themselves. Should the servers be alot more stable, yes, and can they do that if they wanted to, probably. They are probably hard at work for 2.0 and garuda and the couple dozen other things they need to do without hearing "oh yeah Ul'dah's laggy too."...if we ALL want to be in this gaming comunity, and we all want it to work, we could give them a break by spreading out, but that's just me.

Honestly, the problem with this is that going to another city means you are single-tasking. You resign yourself to just that task since the /sh for groups will still be in Uldah. A reasonable search function would help this a bit but, even in XI someone would invite you and then ask you to gather at either the camp or WG (more commonly WG) so the problem is still going be there.

i'm not saying people should leave uldah. i think it is perfectly fine the way it is honestly. i stay there because that's where i want to be and because the groups i run with all have their base there. i was just saying that people are complaining that people are there, but complained when there was a reason to be in other cities.
