The United States is 3,794,101 sq mi and comprises 10,016 cities

The top ten cities make up .001% of the total number of cities and .001% of the total land area...
And yet they hold 8% of the population....

Tokyo's metro area is only 0.014% of Japans total area and 10% of the population lives there

What does this mean? People group up together... Ul'dah represents a basic human tendency

it represents a piss poor and lazy design choice. no starter City should be a Trade hub. there should have been a 4th non starter city and each city should have continued on its own Main Story without converging everyone on the server to one location.

Then everyone would just be clumped up in the 4th city. Its not like we have a huge influx of new players every day that is causing the lag. Its a bunch of people with all level 50s that have nothing better to do than cast holy and flare on themselves while chatting to their linkshell, or simply going to sleep leaving their game on.

point is you where forced into uldah after level 20, with no incentive to leave. they could have stopped this from happening by simply allowing the Main Quest to continue from the respective city.

The problem is there have been many incentives to leave uldah. Back when leves were a big thing broken water leves were huge, but then after everyone started doing them SE basically nerfed the living hell out of the Uldah leves and made the gridania ones much easier to accomplish for maximum SP gain. Did they stop people from teleporting to uldah, just so they could teleport back to gridania a day later to do their leves?

Then again with both moogle and ifrit, the quest giver was in gridania for the biggest content of both 1.19 and 1.20. For 2 patches people would rather teleport back to uldah from gridania after completing each quest the final time for the night just so they could spend more anima the next day to get back to the content they wanted to do.

Whether or not the quest line brought people to uldah is irrelevant. Its in a prime position that is damn near right in the middle of both towns distance wise, and people would have set up camp there regardless because it is human nature. If they had released ishgard with the servers in their current conditions we would just be having the same exact issues there.

Unfortunately the only way for this to ever be fixed is for people to either A) Realize that they are hurting themselves by piling up on top of eachother or B) SE giving us incentives that we absolutely cannot afford to not have for spreading out. The likelyhood of either of those happening is so slim that we will all have to hold out for secret option C) hopefully 2.0 will fix the lag/marketwards/inn issues and overcrowding will no longer be a problem with the new game engine.

    Hi Req and All,

    Some great points here.

To be fair, Valmonte has a point in that Tanaka's team didn't help the cause when they *did* drive everyone following the Main Story to go to Ul'dah. And they did it quite early on (R20 Quest).

And even when Yoshida-san took over, the fact they put the Materia Goblin NPC (and his cohorts) outside Ul'dah (for one of the biggest Crafting changes / foundation for driving everyone's Equipment / Upgrading process) only made things worse.

I think by the time they changed Leves (like nerfing "Dunesfolk for Dinner" at Broken Water), it was already too late. Many players were already Rank 50, habits already formed, etc.

And as you bring up, a fundamental Design Flaw was making Ul'dah in the center of the world, inbetween both Limsa and Gridania.

If they made access to Limsa from Gridania just as close (so all 3 were equidistant), and the Main Story for each Nation continued *in* their Nations, that would've helped things a bit.

    Now it's too late.

As you, Darkstar and many others bring up, now it's up to Yoshida-san and team to come up with real *incentives* to want to make people go to Limsa or Gridania more often.

I love the idea brought up here that besides Linking all the wards, they would list everything in the Home City first, then the Top 10 (or 20) in other Cities, but with a Surcharge. That would go a long way to make staying in the other cities more palatable.

The other key thing is like Darkstar mentioned: We originally had some incentives (like Guild Support / Master Support) for recipes, making people go visit their Guilds in various cities. But some people complained and it got removed. Heck, even buying the Treatises for Crafting / Gathering Training ("Bonecrafting" "Bow making" etc.) were all removed from the Guilds as well.

In the long run, I hope 2.0 with its complete World Redesign will help make all 3 Nations easy to access with each other, and also provides incentives to want to hang out there.

Just looking at them at face value, I enjoy the beauty and setting that they created in parts of Gridania and Limsa a lot. I love the Leatherworker Guild, and the bridge over the tranquil pond and running river / water.

I love the Harbor / Open Sea feel of Limsa and the ships and ports, and the elevated sections of the town overlooking it all.

At this point I think Yoshida-san and team know they're revamping the entire World / Maps, and have stopped trying to give incentives for going to other towns until 2.0 hits. I hold out hope we have incentives to want to go to all 3 Nations (and stay there from time-to-time).
