It has its own predatory retention practices in the form of housing demolition and animal guilt. The latter doesn't affect everyone, but those that do will feel compelled to stick around just because of their island critters. SE knows this. The former at least serves a purpose outside of player retention, but it does none the less serve as a means of keeping people from leaving for too long.

These two things are far less egregious than the practices of some other companies, but they are none the less very intentional.
