F2P locks (faster) progress behind a paywall, where XIV locks aesthetics (the insolence! So you would take a game that charges you and then asks for money rather than a game that is free but asks for money? At least the f2p games are honest with their greed and it does make sense (depending on what they are selling) that they have a cash shop. Games that charge a monthly fee and then locks away things behind a paywall is greed. The mulitmillion corporation could stop at the monthly fee and just add some grinding to keep the subs active but SE chose greed over steady profits. Sorry you had to find out this way. :/
(I say this while whales in XIV exist, lmao))
Profiting off whales in games like XIV is smart business. Scamming everyone to progress in F2P is not the better option.

You're right, they are smart! Nothing like going after the weak willed~!
Not to mention some entirely gatekeep progression (as in, good luck making any actual progress period, not just slower) unless you shell out your credit card. Speaking more in the mobile side of things here (Diablo Immortal comes to mind and the Game of Thrones war strategy game) but if it makes money I wouldn't be shocked if others start adopting it into their games. I'd rather pay a sub and have the cash shop be exclusive to cosmetics than go free to play any day.
