I don't see anyone acting as if Square did it intentionally; just poorly. Additionally, even if they did they'd hate to have you as their PR.
Pretty poor, yep. There are other ways to deal with the issue, even if it's friends for 30 days, then more unlocked for gifting. Or just link in what lodestone knows about mounts and minions. Web wise, it's not so difficult. The API is clearly there to pull up someone's ownership.

Squeenix certainly didn't make it sound like they explored any other options. They just went with the easiest one and community backlash be damned.
This is pretty much par for the course given other recent controversies that have occurred because of Squeenix being tone deaf to what their customers want.
