If they wanted more challenge, just ask for more challenging mobs. Death penalty doesn't add anything to the challenge, it just add annoyance during a challenging fight.
Also, playing certain jobs in a group situation makes you more likely to eat the floor.

And in actual fact, you could almost extend it to say that XP loss rewards being a poor DD, an ineffective healer, a tank who can't hold hate. Because all those things are likely to cause someone else in the group to bite the dust before you.

That comes with content and not by adding xp loss.

The minority that does want it fail to realize that what they want will deter a lot of players. Time sinks does not add a challenge. Paranoia came packaged in with xp loss for XI which just made people sit on the edge with the bashing stick.

    I agree.

Usually when you ask someone that didn't play XI what they know about the game. They'll usually say something along the lines of "is that the game where you lose exp when you die?" or "is that the game you cant solo level?". These two things were probably the two biggest deterrents in XI. Adding a severe death penalty would not be taking steps in the right direction right now.

I honestly question whether they fail to realize it. I think they want most players to be deterred, on the basis that they're "terrible", or "noobs", that they want the majority of the MMO community to stick with games that are already popular.

The psychotic elitism really is shining through on this topic today.

Thing is, as good as you can be, you always bite the floor and die at some point. And in some fight even if your team/ls/party is top notch, you will die repeatedly. So adding more punishment to a fight that's already hard is pretty dumb.

Somebody else mentioned in the thread something that bought back lot of memories. It's actually nice to die and not get upset because you're tired and you lost X hours of game play. Then, if you died because somebody has gameplay problem, it makes you be in a better state of mind to teach that person how to play better.
If it was because the fight was too hard and you had to die, then you learned your lesson and try again when you're stronger/higher ranked/more skilled.

What happens when your party dies in Final Fantasy? Game Over.

What happens when just one character dies? They fall behind other party members in experience.

Back to basics for FFXIV. Don't ignore the history of the series, and the game that started it all. Stop tyring to appease the casual MMO player, and instead focus on the Final Fantasy fans. Or just rename the game Rapture and forget the FF name.

I'm sure you mean "reload just before the fight"

Game over = Turn off the console and throw the disk in the bin. I'm suuuure you did that

Confusing your personal opinion with that of "The final fantasy fans" is a logical fallacy.

edit: damn, sha beat me to it.
