Your last sentence could be the hint though that they are not the same. We could have two different crystal types on our hands The ones that leaked which may have come from the Ascians themselves (seeing how they loved to manipulate) to battle against those WoL who might have otherwise won. And then we would have the memoria crystal which was basically just a powerful weapon used by those that wanted to conquer.

Anyway even if the memoria crystal is not the one that leaked corruption it could still lead to disaster on the source. If those are getting into the wrong hands they could lead to bloodshet and some new kind of summonings. I really dont like that we took them with us...at the same time we at least still have them in our possession right now, so nobody else should use them against us at the moment.

And I mean, both of them were used by heroes to seal away Primals/Eidolons then use those sealed Primals' powers. It's easier for me to believe Zero that the crystal just had different names in different parts of the world, rather than two different crystals that both did the exact same thing.

Maybe the Auracite are the versions of the Memoria crystals that the Ascians changed so that they would corrupt the people wielding them. After all even if Zero herself might have been shielded by the effect because she was never a full human anyway (and that is pure speculation on my side), her mother used her power for quite some time with seemingly no problems.

But wouldn't the fact that she was tainted in the womb into being "part" voidsent imply that the memoria were already leaking eidolon essences before she was born, given her mother was a memoriate?

In addition to this, Zero literally tells us that the memoriates were swayed by the power inside the memoria and started using it to spread darkness. That's the same thing Unukalhai said back in HW.

Could be the plan. Have the Voidsent too powerful to travel via portal to the Source be trapped in crystal. Crystal gets taken to Source and they can then bust out and feast on aether.

I have done nothing but throw sources of power into the chasm around Ishgard for 3 expansions.
