They're probably worried they're going to mess up and make someone angry. You gotta walk on eggshells because of the sensitive types who get mad at the drop of a hat.

When I was new it was WoW PTSD driving me to announce it. Fear of being screamed at for a mistake.
Honestly, I don't mind if someone is "undergeared" relative to the hypothetical ideal; if they've got sufficient gear to queue into the content in the first place, they've hypothetically got sufficient gear to clear. Where I get irritated by "undergeared" is when it's either just plain deliberately egregious—wearing stuff an entire expansion out of date with just like a couple of the latest crafted accessories slapped in to raise the average ilevel, or otherwise doing something they know is cheesy to avoid having to upgrade all their gear and still let them pass an average ilevel check—to the point that their gear is such they cannot even survive a raidwide at full health or something.Often times my gear is out of date, and I am so late to the content I don't want to be a detriment to the group, so I just don't do it at all. My WHM right now is severely undergeared even, and I am currently questioning if I should even do the latest raids next week.
If someone's undergeared but genuinely trying their best, I'll usually just offer to make them gear once we're out of the instance. This is most often applicable to sprouts in ARR or Heavensward, and is why I keep a retainer full of the appropriate mats (so I can just craft immediately without having to run out and get anything), but I've done it for folks at cap as well; I literally made an offer just the other day to someone who was really apologetic for being relatively undergeared in the new dungeon of "if you get the tomestone mats, I'll make you a set of HQ Rinascita gear." And then I did.
Heck, you're on my datacenter. If you really want to do the new raids but feel your lack of current gear is all that prevents you from doing so, I make the same offer: get the tomestone mats, and I'll make an HQ set of the gear. Other than the tomestone mats, all crafting a current set takes is time, and that I have; I can easily craft while doing something else—watching a movie, waiting for something to compile at work, etc.
I aim to make my posts engaging and entertaining, even when you might not agree with me. And failing that, I'll just be very, VERY wordy.Originally Posted by Packetdancer

Basically:”I have not seen nor done this duty before. I will try to be helpful with what role I signed up for & learn as much about the encounter, but please don’t expect me to pull it off perfectly. And no I don’t want you to carry me neither if I can help it.”
EDIT: specifically bolding those parts because I do however have a pet peeve of seeing the “First time” being used as an excuse to enable general bad practices. I.e. even as a first timer, there is no excuse in running 0 cooldowns as a tank in latest EW dungeon.

I've been yelled at, called trash, and been threatened with a kick within 12 hours on new content. Specifically a 24 man.
That story I mentioned above? Syrcus Tower. ARR. Don't paint it like there's no jerk FFXIV players from the start.
This sums it up perfectly.Basically:”I have not seen nor done this duty before. I will try to be helpful with what role I signed up for & learn as much about the encounter, but please don’t expect me to pull it off perfectly. And no I don’t want you to carry me neither if I can help it.”
not that at all. if people get angry, thats a "them" problem. I am just being polite and saying I dont know whats coming up... I am not so insecure that I need to pretend I know whats going on when I dont. its called "courtesy" never had a problem with people receiving it poorly.
Lotta people getting real aggressive for no reason in here. The way I see it, during the first few weeks, almost every single group is going to have new people in it, no need to say anything. In particular I saw people saying first time on literal day one of the patch, like no duh?
