What ARR gear has even remotely the same animations with these? The weapons were the only gear besides eureka armor (and that is just a glow) and the caster contest winner head piece that had the animation since this armor series. At best we get maybe a faint tone or a glow on a piece like the lvl 50 tome head piece for tanks.

To be honest I have to really disagree with this. I find frogsuits much harder to ignore than some ring. And I also find them absolutely creepy and up to scary. So it's really personal.

We have people running around in frog suits, 2B bottoms and bikini tops, animal print thongs dyed metallic green - but a raid set having a glow you don't like is where you draw the line and want a toggle?

FFXIV doesn't have a specific aethstic identity, we had glowing armor before, we have animal suits, we have modern streetwear and a lot of other things.
"It's Final Fantasy, so everything goes" is always the reply when someone thinks something doesn't "fit" and it also applies here.
No one has an issue with the armor. It’s the animation of the giant ring that is the problem. If you want to wear a thong into battle, be my guess, but the glaring giant ring that is 1 foot from the wearer is very noticeable.

To you, maybe. I've never once heard a single comment about the frog suit, and people complain about the rings constantly.

    Quoted for emphasis.

I find neon-coloured thongs or metallic animal suits harder to ignore. It comes down to personal taste: something that bothers someone more will be harder to ignore for that person. Like the Medica II sound grates my ears amd I despise it but I know there are more obvious and obnoxious sounds that I don't notice as much or not at all because they don't bother me personally.

The augmented cashmere healer robe is easily more annoying than the ring in my opinion. The glowing ring knows what it wants to be, the vague uninspired glow on the ARR pieces is just clutter. But this is what this boils down to: personal taste. Everyone claiming that this is some grand hill the identity of the game gets decided upon is looking for moral justification in a vain attempt to convince others that their taste is the correct one.

The 'augmented' item level 90 gear from ARR on the marketboard is one of the only other pieces in the game that have actual vfx and not just some quirky emissive texture tricks like the Eurekan gear, so Saraide is technically correct that they've been around since ARR. But when there's literally only three sets with actual vfx in the game (including the newly introduced Abyssos ones) compared to hundreds upon hundreds without, it's pretty accurate to say vfx gear runs heavily counter to the gear design of FF14 as a whole.

Personally, I think the other Abyssos sets are fine. For me, the giant ring of the tank/maiming sets is the problem child due to how huge it is compared to the much more muted shoulder effects of the others. The ring also looks just bad when you're on the move, since its rigged to your character's back so any combat animations or walking/running animations swing it like 100 miles to the left or right.

Tbf, people complain about stuff like the frog suit constantly as well. Typically in the context of immersion breaking.

Personally I actually kind of like the ring thing. I didn't get it myself cause I went for gearing my healer instead, but I've seen some pretty awesome glams with em.
I also kind of hope this is just the start of similar and more varied vfx'd glams.
Looking foward to see if the Savage gear or next alliance gear have a bit of a glow up.

Is it me or is that a backwards way of thinking? Harder content should reward more unique looking armor/trinkets compared to their easier counterparts, right? Eh, I am arguing against the wind though, lol.

I'll take the armor with the ring over the frog suit any day. At least one of them is an actual high fantasy armor if a bit gaudy vs just a gag joke suit. Every time I do a trial or raid for the first time I pray I don't get one of those ppl in the custscene. I can generally rationalize even the most casual of glams but not those furry suits.

Thank goodness people aren't wearing them as much any more.
