All of the people who are saying no to gear swapping, were probably people who lacked even simple DT- sets on their jobs in FFXI. Gear swapping adds a new dynamic to the game that players can utilize to their advantage. Honestly, if you were even remotely decent in XI, gear swapping shouldn't have been a problem for you.

This makes no sense. Let's pick an event shall we. Let's say Ifrit: You are able to kill it now without gear swaps. If they added gear swaps, it would probably make it easier if people utilized it TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. But you would still be able to kill it without gear swaps. I'm not seeing your point on how you would NEED it to play the game.

All of FFXI was also playable without gear swaps, but they became a de facto necessity for playing because you were a "gimp" if you didn't.

I'm sure if you didn't and something went wrong the person not gear swapping would be the first one replaced. That is if they were let in the run in the first place. Just saying, people are @$$holes. If it were in place it would be required in a sense for any serrious endgame linkshell.
