Hildibrand for relic? Really?

The issue with tying the relic weapons to something as silly as The Gold Saucer is exactly that. These weapons are supposed to be cool, legendary, stunning, the height of whatever you believe a cool weapon should be, and yet as someone else stated chances are we'll be getting something like paper planes for Sage, so on and so forth.

i really don't see the reason why people think a legendary blacksmith that so far allways delivered on epicness factor of weapons paired with the greatest goldsmith in the land that has shown to be perfectly capable of producing normal looking artisinal pieces would hand us some gaudy joke weapon as anything but maybe some early stage joke stuff, especially as square is well aware that the long term value of these weapons is for glamour.

also on people arguing on the seriousness of the quests themselves i have to wonder if they ever paid attention to the other relic weapons.

aside from shadowbringers gunnhildr stuff literally half the questlines were repeated "look at that bald bum gerold, he is so fucking broke and a complete drunkard" jokes. oh and he is soooo fearfull of rowena, lets laugh a bit more about him. heck, arr relics in particular was the culmination of two drunkards working together and among other things dipping the freaking thing into rum.

I don't thnk there's anything laughable about that, it's more a pathetic and sad story. He's a drunkard and a money waster, she's a money-addict who also somehow still loves him. It's more a tragic story than comedic imho.
But then there's this cultural thing of drunk=funny which I'll never understand.

Should I seriously bother going through another expansion of these job changes and new writing direction that goes directly against the kind of storytelling that made me fall in love with this game in Heavensward?

I just love the irony of you constantly talking about wanting a deep and serious fantasy story filled with worldbuilding, and you’re wearing a modern day mid-life-crisis outfit with a baseball cap sitting in a flying car.

while i'm somewhat in agreement that the whole gerold/rowena dynamic is more sad than funny it's still abundantly clear from the way its handled that we are supposed to laugh about his misfortune just like we are supposed to laugh about godbert being scared of Julyan and not think "domestic abuse" when she pulls out her pan.

why on earth are people so obsessed with main character deaths as if this is the absolutely only way to get a compelling story ?

Ya, same. My personal opinion is that killing off characters is a very lazy way for writers to try and get an emotional response out of their audience. It’s such an easy and simple thing to do as a writer. I think what takes far more skill is creating compelling character and political dynamics to envoke thoughts and relatable emotions from the audience.

I think that’s why so many people liked Emet-Selch as a villain for example. Because even though he’s a totally messed up, literal fascist, you can understand the pain he’s feeling from what he’s been through. You understand why he’s doing what he’s doing. He’s a character with depth and nuance. He’s a villain you actually understand. And that’s what makes a good character/story arc.

So, to those saying that FFXIV’s story is getting worse just because there’s more periodically light hearted or silly moments than before? I disagree entirely. This new lady (I can’t remember her name) who took over the writing with Shadowbringers onward is infinitely better than the dude before her, and she’s improving the storytelling in this game leaps and bounds.

Which is, I guess, why I find neither funny. But the rowena vs Gerolt is just small snippets in bigger storylines, while the Hildibrand arc is a whole long quest arc spanning multiple expansions, marked as comedic, and supposedly "self-contained'. You can gloss over a few scenes of G&R being whatever, hard to glos over that type of humor for the whole Hildi line. The only sane thing you can do if you don't find it funny is skip.

i really don't get peoples fixation with wanting main characters to die... i get it, it would be "shocking", and yes there was a time with a lot more death on the good guys side than what we have now, but is it really so important to kill of part of the main cast ? lord of the rings doesn't kill of any main cast after halfway into the first book and even has gandalf "die" and come back even more powerfull than before and it's still considered one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time. Or for anime/manga fans take one piece which had 2 non flashback deaths for the first 1000 or so chapters. why on earth are people so obsessed with main character deaths as if this is the absolutely only way to get a compelling story ?

Game of thrones has irreversably damaged people in that regard. That and a weird fixation on grimdark themes, not understanding that grimdark in its most serious fashion fundamentally does not work and only makes for trash stories.

Just ignore those who whine about cutscene skipping. Unless the cutscene is in the middle of a group duty where you skipping might cause the others to miss out on content in the duty, it's none of their business.

As much as I enjoy cutscenes, I have friends who don't and I want them to also have a good time. It's your game experience, do what you can to make it more enjoyable for you.
