People have already brought stuff up so I am not gonna repeat it.
All I'll say is that I am perfectly happy with the game not forcing me to play daily to stay up to date with convoluted systems upon systems.
Funnily enough I'd actually agree but not for the reason I think you're saying it.
I think people are overly negative for no reason about the MSQ and it seems to be true even when Streamers who go in with a negative mentality play it.
So many of them say that they heard so much bad shit about ARR but ended up actually enjoying it a lot and don't get the negativity at all, certain parts of the MSQ are not actually as bad as people say they are imo.
I think people just know how much better it gets in hindsight and they're worried people will give up on it early and not get to see the better stuff so that's why they say that.
I honestly think the issue is moreso that people are simply not engaging with what's there and are too used to having games force them to do stuff.
And when a game doesn't do that they feel confused and lost.
People say this but then never touch Savage, Extremes, PoTD, HoH ( I actually forgot I haven't yet ), different Jobs and their story, Professions, Eureka and Bozja, Relics, Fate trains, Hunts, The Diadem, different side-quest storylines, the Gold Saucer, mount collecting, minion collecting, glam farming including doing other Savage and Extremes etc etc.
You have an immense amount of content available to you most of which is VERY backwards compatible.
What would you be doing different in WoW tho?
Grinding rep or whatever?
As you yourself said whether it's fun or not might be another story and in WoW you'd be compelled to do it but is that really a good thing?
FFXIV has grinds too with more fun and permanent rewards especially Eureka which is legit fun and completely underrated imo.
I think a lot of people would be legit surprised if they just gave things a chance.
I'd really suggest people expand their horizons a bit and maybe get outside of their comfort zone and try content they haven't instead of waiting for the game to tell them what to do.
I also like the side story content a lot, I did the WAR one recently because I had skipped it and I was legit surprised and it made me laugh a lot.
Going back to old content is a part of every MMO not just FFXIV, the difference is that in FFXIV the content stays more relevant with the scaling ( not saying it's perfect tho, I do have issues with the scaling ).
I really dunno what other MMO's you lot have played/ play where you have this constant stream of new endgame content because I have no idea.
It was the same in WoW but instead of going back and actually doing the fights you'd just go in and one shot stuff over and over again.
AFK:ing in Orgrimmar and Stormwind wasn't just a meme, people did the most recent content then they mostly just AFK:ed.
You have a lot more stuff that stays relevant to do in FFXIV.
Maybe FFXIV isn't for you and that's fine but it's not any different in other MMO's and it's a bit silly to be so dismissive of people bringing up backwards compatibility and stuff like RP because these are actually great strengths of FFXIV that gives you activities to do that most other MMO's dont really offer nearly as well.
Edit: I forgot to mention Treasure Hunts lol.
How many of you have actually tried them before?
They're pretty fun especially to do with your FC and friends.
