It is a social eksperiment as well, and a way to spot out who wil hit and run and who will just cough up, the gil was ear marked for the purchase anyway.
And personally I would have a hard time inviting a person into my FC, that take the more dishonest route.
Am I crazy to think there is/should be a separate group of developers for housing that focus on that vice the devs that work on all the other things in the patches? That being said, I don't think the dev team is capable of programming a system like that to work and not be all jacked up anyway...Seems they don't want to waste developer time making the database to track it, and all the coding to deal with payment and crossing names off the list, and the GM trouble if a FC member leaves the FC and maliciously doesn't pay.... plus a million other edge cases - along with the QA to ensure that nothing went wrong and innocent people's homes weren't destroyed. I mean, imagine a bug where someone who held a large for years and years lost it, because they didn't pay!
I guess it's a case of :- do you want more playable content in the next patch, or instead the Devs to put all that time and effort into reclaiming money instead?
Here is what I found the funniest thing out of all this:
Everyone screams for some type of entitlement 'compensation' when something happens in the game, yet when the same thing happens, everyone cries 'foul' about doing exactly that. It's the best part of this entire debacle.
Doesn't matter what side of the argument you sit on, NOT everyone is going to be happy. Housing in this game is going to remain a hot topic in this game until the core issue is fixed (availability).
Some cry it should only be for FC's, other's cry it should be for everyone, other's cry it should only be for personal's. There's simply a lack of supply and until that issue is resolved (not going to be anytime soon), people will remain unhappy and even then you're going to have fringe types on each end. Better to please the majority 80% rather than the fringe folks.
What is done is done, time everyone moved on from this.
Getting the houses out to their rightful winners is the #1 priority. People have had to wait over a month for their results, and it would be ridiculous to delay things any further for the sole purpose of making sure to take their gil.
If you were lucky enough to win a house in a non-bugged plot, then be thankful for that. You have been able to to enjoy your house for the past month without needing to deal with the drama and uncertainty of having a glitched plot. It is not your place to judge what happens to the gil of the winners of these plots.
The few who got their houses have now had a month. A month to grow their gardens, build their submarines and other things in the FC workshop. The ones stuck with the bug will never get ahead of that market curve.

100% this.
While I understand that people who legitimately won their plots will be a bit miffed about having to pay gil while others are potentially getting houses for free, the whole thing just reeks of sour grapes to me. The compensation of free housing is just that - compensation from Square to say "We shit the bed, we're sorry." and that should be fine. As for the gil itself, it'd only get removed from the game anyway - which is the intention of houses in the first place, an endgame gil sink for people with more gil than they know what to do with; and if you play for a couple of years at least you'll fall into this camp pretty fast because the game has a way of just throwing gil at you without a lot to spend it on. Ultimately the result of this is a couple hundred million gil floating around each server that'll probably be spent on furniture because players are feeling flush and will be wanting to splash cash on nice expensive housing glams. If I were one of these people who got a house a month ago, instead of moaning about how unfair it is, I'd be crafting and looking to capitalise.
Well, I guess in the end maybe the fairest you can get is everyone is unhappy for one reason or another.
