I remember long time ago..., when we saw the name 'Squaresoft', there was no question if this game is worth buying it. Squaresoft stands somehow for 'good game'.
But since it's Square Enix..., it's like the company lost it's soul. They start to produce too much and with too less quality imo.
Also FF14 was a disaster before Yoshi P. saved it.
Squaresoft was pretty terrible as well. Every now and thing they would produce a banger to keep the company a float, but a majority of there games were very bad.

Go back and look at why the game is called Final Fantasy.

It was some kind of roundbased rpg with a big party, which let's us choose which chars we wanna fight with or see cutszenes with. Now it's more and more only action rpg and no big parties anymore. I wonder if FF16 also will end the Sci-Fi Fantasy genre. It seems to be medieval. But we know not much about it yet.
Final Fantasy lost it's soul when the creator of Final Fantasy left the company. Final Fantasy 9 was the last Final Fantasy game that Sakaguchi wrote and directed and it shows as it is a huge tribute to all the past games NES and SNES FF games that came before it. FF10 was the last good Final Fantasy because Sakaguchi did assist with it's development behind the scenes.

They made a lot of games you just don't know about them because a good number of them were not ported over to NA because they were bad. Partnering with Enix was bound to happen eventually as they had already worked on a multitude of projects together such as Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. They would also be able to benefit off being a single company with the two most popular RPG franchises in Japan, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
