Please enable data centre travel between regions

JP already has 32 servers. All SE is doing is splitting the existing worlds into 4 data centers instead of the current 3.

I agree that Materia is at a disadvantage only having 5 worlds but I don't think they could allow cross-region play for Materia without allowing it for all regions and SE probably wants to be cautious about cross data center travel at first to make certain there are no issues that weren't discovered in testing.



Most players wouldn't. Most probably won't even travel outside of their current data centers other than a couple of trips for curiosity's sake at first.

But there absolutely will be trolls who delight in stirring things up. And that's going to be just as true of some JP players. There are still the occasional bad seeds there just as much as NA and EU. I suspect that's why SE added in "Each data center will also be judged based on the social customs of that data center's region in the real world." to the Prohibited Activities update last year. They wanted it stated so action could be immediately taken against those using cross region travel to stir up trouble once it's implemented.

There's absolutely nothing stopping a troll from making a new character on a JP data center right now. It just seems strange that the issue is always framed as Westerners, particularly Americans rushing in and "ruining" the Japanese servers. It smells a lot like xenophobia.

Or a lot like people coming to XIV over the past two years, being amazed at the community when the one in the game(s) they played until recently are so horrible, then remarking on the increased visibility of trolls in this game as more people move here from other games.

No candy-coating here, after living in Japan for a while and coming back to NA online gaming communities I rolled on a JP server as fast as I could when starting XIV because I encountered too many toxic assholes in NA-based MMOs. Yes, it was specifically to get the hell away from the cesspit of horrible behavior that were NA MMO servers. No, I do not want the cesspit of those behaviors working its way over to JP servers.

Is it xenophobia? No. I'm American and live in the US. I do, however, want to keep the sanctuaries that are JP datacenters free of the dumpster fires, behavioral baggage, and bad habits that people coming from other NA MMOs bring with them. Am I judgmental? If that's what you want to call it, sure. After too many experiences with asshats over too many years in NA-based MMOs, it's clear to me that behaviors and attitudes I want to avoid are common and accepted among the general NA-based MMO player base. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I've learned my lessons and the message is loud and clear.

Link NA, EU, and OCE and let everyone on those DCs play with each other until the end of the game, I think it's awesome. However, keep the JP DCs separate and places where people who want to be there for the long-term and accept the social contract of being on a JP server can play in peace.

I've just read the news about the Oceania data centre and everything which is being done to relieve congestion and it's all great news. The part which really upset me though is this

"while the system has been designed to allow cross-region travel, we'll be limiting it to travel between logical data centers within a physical data center at first due in part to differences in game economy and values. We’ll be paying keen attention to the opinions of players as we consider whether or not to introduce cross-region travel in the future."

When the game started, the NA servers were on the East Coast. Many players from Europe decided to play on them to continue to maintain groups which they had established in Final Fantasy XI or in beta. Personally, have been playing with some folks in my Free Company since 2004. Because the servers were on the East Coast, the ping was acceptable, if not ideal.

Now the NA servers are on the West coast, the ping is large and it does cause a disadvantage. I appreciate that this is not everyone's hjistory but Square Enix made their FFXI servers global, I had friends and linkshell members from Alaska to Singapore and we moved as a group to FFXIV

I know this is a different game and I accept that I could move to an EU data centre but that would break up a mixed NA and EU group of almost 18 years... The very folks who make it worth playing in the first place.

As a UK player on an NA server, I am at a disadvantage. We have EU/NA folks in our group and the EU players were really hoping to be able to travel to the EU data centre to undertake more demanding duties.

Allowing folks to travel to other regional data centres also enables you to play reliably outside of your home centre's prime time.

This is the dream...this is the goal.

It's definitely a shame given how FFXI had all regions on the same servers but that meant that all servers were located in Japan, especially since that melting pot was a good contributor to what gave the foundation for FFXIV's community to be what it is today* But I guess the kinds of XI players in JP who didn't enjoy sharing their servers with NA and EU eventually got what they wanted, given the strides in technology since 2002 and the operational capability to have regional servers for XIV.

*By this I just mean that the XI > XIV players made the most out of a second chance to make a online community in XIV, especially since XI's wasn't perfect either but there was still a communal understanding that the server population you had is what you had to work with, flaws and shortcomings and all.

I for one rather they did not open up data center travel. European servers are fairly calm non toxic in general. I wouldnt want that usa based cesspool invading us. I know its a pity for people wanting to play with friends on other data centers but if you are really serious about that its easy to create a character on another datacenter.

I thought you can't sell on market while visiting other server? I believe the restrictions will remain the same, if not stricter. So we don't have to worry about the economy.

OCE Main here and Healer in need queue took 30 mins on non peak and about 5-10 min on peak. I made an alt on NA and dps queues are 5 mins lol

I doubt the assholes you speak of will enjoy being on the JP DCs.
Connecting to NA from Japan usually get you around 160-240 ping depending on which coast the DC is. (I assume it is also the same vice versa.) They will likely complain about the ping, then head back to NA, or stay long enough to get banned if they are noticeable toxic. Based on stories about being put in jail (NA), the GMs don't mess around when it comes to reports regarding player behavior. That contribute to FFXIV having a significantly less toxic community than most other NA based MMOs.

But I get where you're coming from, completely understandable. I've met my fair share of aggressive f******es in MMOs, especially Moba.
