Oh joy, someone else blaming us for not knowing the future when we purchased the game nearly a decade ago.
Please put your schadenfreude and victim blaming somewhere else. It doesn't belong here.
I see you're new here. The requirements 8 years ago were NOT the same as they are now. There have been several changes made to Steam FFXIV accounts over the past 3 years or so that weren't there when people first bought the game through Steam in ARR and Heavensward, and by now they have max level characters and many hours and several hundred dollars sunk into the game so they have a right to be concerned and speak about the changes. People, ideally, SHOULD have the option to buy and add PC keys to their account the same as they can buy and add Playstation keys or buy and add Mac keys and still be able to use their same characters and items from the past 7+ years, just as adding those other keys to your current account allow you to do.Victim blaming? Smug? Holier than thou? I knew exactly what I was getting into when I purchased FFXIV on Steam and the requirements have always been the same. I'll agree on the account system being a bit of a joke but the moment you purchased on Steam and activated on your SE account, that SE account/game license has always existed under your Steam account and thus requires a link and use of Steam to play the game. You're not a victim of anything here, the system is working as intended.
It wouldn't be a problem if SE entire website and e-commerce system didin't run and look like something from 1998.I bought the game on Steam because at the time it seemed convenient, I played other games from Steam and I wanted to keep everything together on one nice little platform. I haven't had any real issues with playing the steam version other than being locked into buying expansions from Steam. Unless they have changed it, when you buy the steam version only CD keys from steam will register correctly for future expansions, it is why I had to buy HW twice because I originally bought it from the SE store and when it went live my CD key did not work for my account. From what I understand Steam is unusually restrictive in that even if you buy Keys for other platforms your account will not transfer, where it seems that PS and PC seem to be able to move back and forth freely as long as you have the appropriate keys.

I use a vpn and have a steam account. I had 0 issues setting up my linked account just a major annoyance that once again SE forced me to change my password for something on THEIR END not mine.
Something else is the culprit.
Also +1 to allowing Steam users to have a PC license even if it means we have to rebuy the game. If PS and PC can use the same account across platforms, so should we.
I'm tired of being told to wait for post-patches and expansions for fixes and increased healing requirements that are never coming. Healers are not fun in all forms of content like all jobs should be, they're replaced by tanks and dps due to low healing requirements and their dps kit is small for 0 reason, when in the past we had more options and handled things just fine. I refuse to play healer in roulette come DT. I refuse to heal EXs, I refuse to go into Savage, and I am boycotting Ultimate.

Put me down for the : "willing to re-buy the game if it meant I could swap from steam to non-steam" camp please.

I'm not going to lie. This is the one area of the game where every other MMO out there blows SE away. Why, in this day and age, are we paying for an MMO on a per platform and per account basis rather than exclusively on a per account basis? I should be able to simply buy a FFXIV license and then download it to whatever device I feel like playing on with a single key. It also makes no sense that I still have to manually enter a key to update my account every expansion. I should be able to simply buy the new expansion from my account and have it automatically grant access to the game to the account the I made the purchase from.

You do realize that every other platform this game is on allows you to share the same account across those multiple platforms right? Like, that is already a feature that playstation and PC players have access to. You can literally buy the game on every other platform and play on whichever one you want except for Steam. I genuinely don't know how else to rephrase this to make it clear what people are asking for here.
Like, literally, direct quote from SE's website:
This quote's from ARR but there is straight up an option in mog station to add a Mac or Playstation license to my account. It is possible to play with the same account on the Windows®, PlayStation®3, and PlayStation®4 platforms. Customers who own a copy of FFXIV for Windows® and wish to use their account on the PlayStation®3 or PlayStation®4 version will need to purchase an additional copy for the desired platform.
