It's probably the elementals or some part of the Twelve that governs rebirth and life, or it may just be a part of natural law.

Their souls were torn apart in various ways, from having them be trapped in a crystal and the crystal shattered, to being absorbed by a primal, to being manually torn apart by the WoL with a world's worth of Light aether, to willingly expending themselves for the greater good.

The Warrior of Light is one of the sundered parts of Azem, as in if all the shards were rejoined, the WoL would become Azem again. (if they survived the ordeal, that is)
