I don't know why but I thought that was a given. As they said that going with WHM should unlock abilities from other classes. That in turn should give you something to want the WHM. Maybe the whm is not a prime example, but I don't want to loose say sentinel or other abilities on my LNC to become DRG, for what? Jump? While you're absolutely right, my personal preference is that the defining differences should be independent from gear. While gear can make a huge difference (i.e why WHM's Cure II/III could be higher than any other job in XI), I feel like a naked WHM should have a notable advantage over a naked CNJ. They do, in abilities, and that's why I seemed to focus on them.
I just had an idea, though--what if the Job Stone we equipped gave +10% Healing Potency, PLD job stone gave +10% Defense, etc?
So a whm should indeed get cure +10% or something. Similarly other jobs should offer something besides the 5 abilities. And that is why we need the update on the lodestone about the jobs soon :P
Here's the BIG update!

It kind of reminds me of the Dual-class system in AD&D (2nd Ed... yes I am old, I remmember it before the 'Advanced' part pre 1st eddition. ^.^)
The key is to know the terminology.
Classes are the ones you know of old. Conj, Pug, etc.
Jobs tho are dual classes. Combined classes... White Mage, etc. Knowing that makes the rest more clear.
(though I'd love to see 'class stones' too. To make occupation switching easier!)
(Ifrit) Dipped them in lava like gravy and bread. Oh heck that bed, oh heck that bed.
Greetings!
There have been some questions on the Japanese side regarding jobs, so I’d like to relay what was answered.
To change jobs, just equipping the job specific weapon will not do the “job” so to speak (heh heh...sorry). You will need to equip the appropriate soul crystal. There was also a comment about whether we could add an icon to the console tray as a shortcut for job changes; however, considering 2.0’s UI and system specifications we will not be adding this.
Help text for items will also be displayed in the below manner to show which classes and jobs can equip certain items:
[Required] Gladiator Marauder Paladin Warrior
Previously existing items will also have their help text edited to account for jobs.
Finally, there was one last question about whether there would be content that requires everyone to play as jobs, but there are no plans for content where you could not take on the challenge if you are not playing as a job.

you will just have to add another line to your gear swap macro... at least i hope it will be that easy.
/equip main "Weapon Name"
/equip stone "Job Stone Name"
