Like a combo that gives stacks reducing your GCD as you go through that combo ? That'd be interresting, and might be a way to balance double weaving and oGCD cooldowns or something

Well, you know how RDM keeps getting more and more finishing moves tacked onto their combo? So what starts as a 5.5 second combo has more than doubled into a 13 second cast sequence? This would be the opposite, Rune Fencer would get more steps leading up to their finishing move, but the more steps added, the faster the combo gets to the point that they'd be throwing out attacks as fast as Ninja casts Mudras if they keep adding more as expansions go on while keeping that finisher as the capstone of the combo that just gets more explosive with more stacks from more steps.
No other class in this game has an "accelerating burst phase" so to speak so it'd be a nice contrast to MCH and RPR that just immediately go ham when they turn on theirs.

*Gestures vaguely at SAM.* Though, admittedly, RDM swords are just sharp-edged wands that apparently take 50+ gauge to fortify enough to hit anyone with.
On the larger topic at hand, I feel like any Mystic/Rune Knight would need a serious dose of lore identity to differentiate itself at this point.

I mean more general swords than just katanas. Samurai is very specific.*Gestures vaguely at SAM.* Though, admittedly, RDM swords are just sharp-edged wands that apparently take 50+ gauge to fortify enough to hit anyone with.

I don't think lore identity would be much of an issue honestly, if we can get "angry farmers made a pact with demons" to have a DPS dark knight FF11 brought to FF14, there is tons of way to have a lore around Mystic Knights.
Be it elite soldiers equipped with alchemically enhanced weapons in thavnair, made to channel aether at an optimal ratio to cast the spells at the same time, or other stuff from either Meracydia or other liberated regions.
Rune/mystic should be a melee DoT class. I think it could work well.
All I want and hope for is another DPS job that fights alongside a controllable PERMANENT pet like old summoner. Thats my vibe and aesthetic. Scholar is fun and probably my favorite healer but I dont particularly like healing in itself.
If its a tank class I wouldnt mind it at all though.
Katanas are no more specific than a messer, a longsword, a broadsword, an arming sword, a dao, a curtana, a tulwar, a scimitar, a rapier, or any other form of sword. (Heck, katana originally just meant "sword", unlike more specific terms like a ninto, wakazashi, dachi, etc.)
That said, if we're to give MSK a sword even while Paladin remains the "everything else" among one-handed swords, we're going to need another iconic blade at least as iconic as RDM's rapier/epee/tuck and SAM's katana/tulwar/etc.
Sidenote: If we're to make the MSK concept a Scouting class, a Thavnairian "Dervish" seems a decent fit. Otherwise, MSK definitely seems to lend itself more to the above-average armor of Maiming.

Could be a pairing of sword+dagger. This would also allow to reuse old models from PLD and NIN for example. Something called an "athame" (ritualistic daggers used for magic rituals) or things like that.
As cool and fitting as a Whipblade would be for a scouting gear melee job, I would dig it for Thief swords (FFIX).
Also remember, all of Zidanes Dyne skills had runes in their animation.
