I can't really comment as I've skipped the entire story via any chance I got since just before Heavensward. I'll probably get to actually watching all the cutscenes at the Inn once I finish crafting up a storm in 6.1.

It's interesting how opinions differ, I played most RPGs since SNES times. For me ShB made FFXIV the best of the FF series (which was FFVI before) and EW sealed the deal and made it my favourite RPG story. Granted FFXIV has the adventage that it has alot of time to build up the story and lore so it is kind of an unfair comparison but it is what it is.
So for me it's not only a good story for MMO standards but also for RPG standards. And no I'm not a casual story enjoyer, I get very invested in lore.
You say that FFXIV doesn't have a good story, and the dumpster fire of TLOU2 is your choice of comparison? lmaoI played a lot of other Final Fantasy's and a lot of gaming sites say that FF14 has one of the best stories in the franchise so I tried it out. This is an issue of the hype killing the game. FF14 has a good story but it's not as good as the hype makes it out to be so in the end I was disappointed. I can give you 50 games that had a better story than FF14.
The first issue is that there is too much filler in the story that adds next to nothing to the lore or the story. Having to play hide and seek with children is not interesting. Having to harvest vegetables as the freaking Warrior of Light is stupid. The game suffers from being an MMO by having to give you way too much filler.
The second issue is that the game can't be as immersive as modern story-driven games. The Last of Us 2 is capable of making you feel sad, angry, and horrified because the game is designed in a very immersive manner. FF14 makes you read the dialogues which isn't as immersive as modern story games.
The third issue is that even in world-ending, cataclysmic events, there is no sense of urgency. This is partially because FF14 isn't as immersive as single player games. It's also because there are way too many Mary Sue moments in the game where you expect someone to die but they miraculously survive. After a few Mary Sue moments you just don't expect anyone to die anymore. Because of that there is not much tension to be felt in the story.
I'm not saying the story is bad, but it's definitely not one of the best stories in a video game nor is it really even one of the better stories among the Final Fantasy franchise. I enjoyed FF14 and it does have a better story than WoW but I don't think it matches up to actual single player games at all. So I really don't get the hype and IMO people have just not played enough thought-provoking story games outside of FF14. Saying it has one of the best stories in video gaming history is an exaggeration at best.
Seriously ? of course tells lou2 a story in a more immersive better way, it’s more immersive in every way, but the comparison is unfair as lou2 is not a mmorpg, also if u like the story is a different matter. I play a lot of story heavy games and every non mmorpg I play tells the story in a more immersive way especially if the motion capture and voice animations is done correctly.
Ffxiv because of the static way they tell the story, a big part is text only, and motion capture is not viable or impossible will in my opinion never have the immersive feel of a non mmorpg game. This said at times they succeed even with the limited tools to tell a interesting Story which is impressive but also for some weird reasons they make also weird odd decision in the story telling which slows the story to a halt and you have a fashion show while the world is burning.
EQ, EQ2, Darkfall, hardcore MMORPG player. After 15 year break returning as a casual player taking it slow this time.

1: Your opinion and yo uare entitled to it nothing wrong with that. This is an end to an 11 year old story. One of the longest ever told in a live service style game.
2: It is an aboslute immersive game story. I felt all those emotions over the past 11 years of play.
3:I can sorta agree here with this point. there are at times points where the story gets put on pause so you can do a story plot point or trial.
4: imho this has been one of the best FF stories for myself. Me being a massive fan of FF9 over all else. I think this story is quite on par with the top 3 FF out there but again everyone has their own opinions on it![]()
The fact that there is much outrage over EW's story seems to imply that FF14's story is indeed overrated. It simply cannot keep up with greats like The Last of Us II.1: Your opinion and yo uare entitled to it nothing wrong with that. This is an end to an 11 year old story. One of the longest ever told in a live service style game.

Everybody has an Opinion.
And that is Ok.
I personally love the story from beginning to end. Even the Slow parts of the Old Post-Arr. And the low points of Stormblood
To be honest, I only ever see people here complain about EW's story. Everywhere else people seem to enjoyed it and have a good time, me included, so I think its just this minority.
Which isnt bad, different strokes for different folks and all that
My opinion of EW Story is that it was okay, maybe good. 7 out of 10, probably. I don't like how Meteion came out of literal nowhere as the big bad who caused everything else, or how the "Final Days" only affected a couple zones for like 3 levels and that was it.
