    You know the cutscenes are rendered in real-time meaning the world you see in the CS is the world you see when playing .. and the world of 1.0 no longer exists and was built in an engine long consigned to where it belonged, the grave of failed software, so there's no way to render the 1.0 CSes as they were seen by us at the time.

    As much as I'd like to experience the 1.0 story myself, there's really not all that much we're missing from not having it. I've watched the whole thing from a Gridanian perspective on Youtube, and let me tell you, the world is very different. The calamity reshaped Eorzea, so much so it's a plot point in ARR.

    It can't be recreated with a new story+, as the zones are different throughout the world. To experience it we'd essentially need an expansion for it. And I'm not sure I see a point to that, as much as I'd like to play a version of it where things played well.

    The unfortunte truth is that while the story beats are cool, the gameplay strangled it.

    Honestly, my personal feel of 1.x was that it was a lot of really interesting ideas that never quite gelled into a cohesive, functional whole. Like, the idea of renting market stalls? Kind of cool. The actual implementation of it? That made me want to scream any time I needed to go buy something. The idea of teleportation being something that depleted your own aether enough that it became dangerous (or impossible) after doing it too often, until your anima replenished? Really neat, from a lore perspective, and made the distances you needed to cross in the world meaningful. In practice? Well... see my ranty bit about the Black Shroud.

    So it felt to me like a lot of "huh, that's a neat idea" combined with constant low-grade frustrations with the actual implementation of said ideas. And for many people—including, eventually, me—it seems the frustrations eventually came to outweigh the "huh, that's a neat idea" factor.

    The things that made 1.x interesting weren't in the story, generally, but rather all the weird systems; for all the flawed systems, the game was very good at generating experiences. Many of those experiences were born of frustration and trying to find ways around it (muttermutter Black Shroud mutter), but they were memorable nonetheless. But that all? I feel like that's something you can't recapture without literally recreating the old game.

While not explicitly retconned, it's sure been swept under the rug and ignored, and time-travel since then has been treated as a much more complicated prospect.

    1.0 was brilliant, technical issues aside. Anyone who says otherwise is a coward!

    There is a good amount of story/lore disconnect, granted, but tbh this is a created fantasy world and a good writer would be able to work it together with a bit of effort.

If you remember the scene where we handed Cid his goggles which confused many a lore forum poster at the time and is still brought up from time to time. The Echo has never been us actually going into the physical past but we were definitely interacting with people's memories in funky ways.

    Eh it was confirmed by ferne that during 1.0 we did go to the past but we weren't doing a butterfly effect. It's how in the 30 alchemist quest we brought the elixir that we had made in the echo by someone to the kid that kept passing out and then the flower we got from the Gobbue in the Flowers for All intro for 1.0 Ul'dah..
