Regarding WoW I'm actually surprised it didn't happen sooner, I think the main reason it took as long as it did was because Blizzard baited a lot of people to pay for a 6 month subscription upfront- but only provided content for 1 month and to spread it out they time gated and inflated virtual currencies etc they did it before and it was frown upon, this year people had more time on their hands and quickly burned out knocking their head against the wall.
Same thing could happen here, as for semiconductor shortage du to COVID yes it's true, but that servers are not available is bullshit. Another thing I think Square Enix handled incredibly poorly is the Mac release of this game, it's always been a second class citizen; infact it's almost tragic to call it a mac version as it's the windows version running in a crossover (wine) compatibility layer.
Well Apple released according to plan; it was no surprise at all, developers had access to the prerelease versions for over 6 months, did Square Enix do anything? Nope nothing at all until it was released and suddenly everyone who upgraded was unable to even launch the binary due to an incompatibility, Square Enix response? "We might fix this in december" fortunately tech savy people figured out what the issue was and removing a single file was all required to get it started, but non the less they charge full price for it and it's obviously not even supported.
Or another example some year ago I bought Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition on my iPhone, this year I upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max launchd the game and to my surprise audio just doesn't work- wrote Square Enix tech support, got the classic "restart phone, check mute status" etc wrote back and then all of sudden they responded this was a known issue and it will be fixed in a future update but no ETA, well this is over 7 months ago and yet no update surfaced- but instead they released "pixel remastered" version of other Final Fantasy games.
And even worse, I was stupid enough to buy a Final Fantasy bundle on steam during this summer it included FF XIII and XIII-2 among others, I thought great I never played those the darn games don't even launch on an updated system- there was not a word about it on the product page I read the forums and see this is an issue that been reported over and over again years ago, still not fixed... But let me guess there will be a FF XIII pixel remaster or something sooner or later- of course you have to purchase it again.
Personally I feel my patience with Square Enix is very thin by now and this certainly did not improve it, the FFXIV dev team seem cool and nice but SE as a company has soon seen my last cents. This is the only SE game I still pay for and then this happens but anyway can't do much but complain at the moment, but I for one will leave this permanently if it's not sorted before this year is over.
