Ok, I'm not sure I follow your reasoning though, Square been quite offensive marketing final fantasy; they had/have a very generous trial mode and so on then stars aligned and people finally had it with Blizzard not listening to community feedback- it was never about infrastructure- the great migration happened and all budgets and projections of course got skewed, the decision was made to stop selling Final Fantasy XIV to new players for a while, that situation I can completely understand was out of the blue for Square Enix.

But this expansion- that been hyped for a long time and with past history in mind can not been a surprise, I think this situation is no one elses fault but Square Enix and it smells greed long way, but I also believe this will backlash tremendously if not sorted out, it has nothing to do being a charity, they actively baited for players- now they got them and they can't service them.
