Neighborhoods are a nice concept but aren't worth all that's given up in practice.
I was running around the Firmament yesterday cus I hadn't been in the zone in a long time and I wanted to see what it looked like completed. It was actually kind of sad to me because there are all these NPCs and the place is bustling and it's clear that this is what the devs WISH the neighborhood housing system was like, but it's not. When Ishgard housing comes out there won't be NPCs to make the zones feel alive, there will be mismatched houses all over the place, and after a month or two you'll hardly see anyone around those houses. Is that really worth players not being able to get a house unless they compete with bots or win the lottery? Is it really worth people not having any real prospect of ever getting a bigger house?
Wildstar could deliver instanced housing with far more options but XIV, with its budget and popularity, can't? There isn't much to go on with Island Sanctuary so can't really speak to that for now, but S-E should look at seriously expanding the apartment system so you can upgrade the size.
instanced housing is suppose to come with island sanctuary if i understood the past live letter.
1. Eliminate the wards, instance the plots. This will put everyone in the same neighborhood, 100 or more owners per plot, who will share the same streets when they're off the plot. That should make things look a bit busier.. 2. Give players the option to select what houses they see on neighboring plots via the placards. Pick what you want to see there (and visit), and it sticks until you change it or the selected plot and house disappear. Don't like the Paissa house next door? Just pick another one to display in it's place.
Dude, as someone who's bought six houses (three of which were relocations), the system kinda sucks.
(And before anyone asks, this was for two characters on two different data centers, and then getting a new place after server transferring. So I currently own only one house)

Instanced housing has never been mentioned as a feature of Island Sanctuary at any time by anyone from SE. It wasn't even mentioned in the infamous "Meoni interview" where it was supposedly promised to Meoni by YoshiP when Meoni wasn't even the content creator who was asking the question about island Sanctuary.
Confusion seems to come from different players having different definitions for instanced housing. If all you want is a private instance to yourself, then maybe it does fit your definition of housing. If you're expecting a place you can customize to your liking as you would a house, it is not housing.
Agreed. The neightborhoods generally really aren't worth it. I hardly ever see other players doing anything but idling by market boards in my personal or FC ward, and seeing other peoples houses next to mine doesn't really add anything to the experience.Neighborhoods are a nice concept but aren't worth all that's given up in practice.

That said I don't see them taking the time to come up with a new housing system, we're probably stuck with this base system though at least improvements can be made like the upcoming lottery system. But I really wish they hadn't gone for the neighborhood idea and just done isolated instanced housing from the start.
Every housing thread I post that I wish they would have penthouse instanced housing in each of the three major cities unlocked through your GC. This would require you rank up in your GC (giving value back to the system), and reward a place of honor within the city. You upgrade from basic, not customizable inn room to actually having a little slice of the city to call your own.
Size larger than a cottage but comparable to a medium.
Ever since anounced and explained many of us came to the forums to say how bad of an idea actual neighborhoods were: Were shun as nay-sayers, doom-sayers: That they were great and everything was going to be fine - After all they were only for FCs back in the day... Haha...
Then for years many of us have been calling on Yoshida - On his stubborness to continue with this design.
At this point in time it has only proven that it was a bad design decision. Unnecesarily generating a fake sense of exclusivity, a predatory penalty over player's time and ended up pretty uneffective on it's intended purpose: Socialization. One of those things you cannot actually force, huh.
With instanced housing you could have arguably even more of a social experience - Since EVERY player would be part of the experience. But that would requiere a content scrap unreasonable by now.
5 Years ago, having Yoshida entered reason and listen to the critical feedback given, it would have had a solution. Today nothing short of a "A Housing Reborn" patch would be needed.
Thus XIV has one of the worse housing systems ever implemented in a MMORPG by far, by mere credit of the developer stubborness, obtuse game design and not listening to feedback. I think is poetic - Shows how even a god can bleed.
