Many people are willing to settle, but even the apartment availability is horrifically underequipped.

I love this game, but the housing aspect couldn't be more incompetently handled and that incompetence boils down to the design-level because some devs have some insipid nostalgia for a neighborhood. (My neighborhood's activity is restricted to a biweekly brothel. How nice.)

Honestly, it would be better if they ABANDONED the Wards system. Add in instanced housing. Make islands the answer to the problem. Make it possible for EVERYONE to have the housing space they want.
To the people suggesting apartments as a solution: Apartments are just not enough space, and are a hassle to invite other players to. They're not good enough for those of us that love to decorate and share our spaces. They're also fairly limited, as many wards on my server have none available... And you should not have to join a free company to get a small housing space that can be taken away from you in an instant.

The wards system is just not working. The game is too big, now. It barely worked in the old days of Lotro, the game they copied the system from, and only worked there because they could afford to add enough wards (having over 70 for each housing area). Nothing less than doubling or tripling the amount of wards is going to make so much as a dent in the issue. Make instanced housing a thing, SE, for individuals and FC's.

And if he doesn't care then the way the hierarchical system at S-E works is that no-one even mentions it (hint: there's no team input there). Number two: What little housing there is keeps whale players hostage. You need to both maintain your sub to keep it as if you ever lose it, it'll be MANY months or NEVER getting one back. So even in down times when you're really playing other games waiting for the next expansion, everyone with a house needs to keep paying into the system. If there were ample spots then S-E would lose $$$. So, either YoshiP wants something done and accounting says it'll be profitable, or it just doesn't even get a second thought. AT.ALL.

I mean, to be fair, he does care...he just cares about having a neighborhood style of housing since that's what he prefers (I believe it's based off one of his favorite games (?)). If he didn't care in general, I don't think we would have gotten the lottery system (which was requested by the player base and ultimately a healthier option for your hands and sanity compared to placard spamming & random relocators).

The reality, at least imo, is what Moqi is referring to. They make money off neighborhood housing and switching to full instanced would remove that pipeline, so either they have to figure out a way to compensate for the profit loss or keep things the way they are. I don't really agree anymore that dual-housing systems would work out as I don't know many people who would choose to have a house they have to pay monthly for over a free one (unless they do something like making instanced houses feature-lacking compared to neighborhood housing).

So, I think we could get instanced eventually but it would come at a cost of perhaps a more invasive cash shop (imagine if you had to buy housing upgrades for instanced w/ real money) or a higher subscription cost or some other form of monetization.

You aren't. If they can make extra money off it, they won't give it to you for free. See: housing, inventory space, limited aestethician options, season rewards... They are masters at creating a problem and then selling you the solution.

They did the same in FF11. For years we requested more inventory space, for those who not aware. FF11 is extremely armor reliant, most jobs need 4+ gearsets at all time, some more than others. Each set is anything from a couple pieces to a full set excl weapon (since you'd lose your TP which needed for weapon skills). Your inventory is max 80 slots with 2 "wardrobes", similar to our Chocobo Saddlebag.

They then added more wardrobes, up to 6 additional. Great. But they are €2/mo per wardrobe. My monthly sub (unsubbed at the moment) is like €25 for 6 wardrobes in total, so 4 paid ones and 3 character slots (yes you have to pay per character, and having alts is while not required, very nice for login points and campaigns).

The bare minimum sub is like €12 IIRC.
