Survival mechanics eh? That'd be pretty cool imho but I doubt it'd be feasible![]()

You're probably right that it wouldn't be as easy to implement as I think. I have no game development knowledge so what seems easy to me is probably much more complicated in reality. To be fair, it's an idea that would cause the devs to take time implementing and balancing it when they could be working on other things for something very few people are likely to use. Furthermore, if something like this would be considered, it would lead to 100s of other request for similar things and it would get out of hand very quickly. It wouldn't be as easy as you think to implement, for sure.
If the world was truly open world like wow, yes. It could be actually interesting.
But in instanced zones it's boring. Besides, you can do it on your own without having the option

Put all your gil on your retainer.
There, ability to teleport nuked.

It’s funny that clearly most of you have not played FFXI in a long time. Currently there are more teleport points available in FFXI than FFXIV. They got around to improving the lengthy travel time there as well and it’s an almost 20 year old game. Adding punishment mechanics here is more or less not a good use of development time. Even if they made a special server for it I feel it would honestly die out pretty quickly, MMO playerbase got old and our free time is not what it used to be. There is a reason all these quality of life improvements became popular.

If you put all the gil in my retainer then I promise you there wont be any temptation issues. . . . :3
I really should remember to state old FFXI, sometimes I forget that the game has RADICALLY changed (since I obviously don't play it anymore, only memories I have are of it being hardcore lol). Months to go from level 74 to 75, weeee...It’s funny that clearly most of you have not played FFXI in a long time. Currently there are more teleport points available in FFXI than FFXIV. I think seeing them, or at least if they're sold (since some people can see anything as another thing), as punishment mechanics already show it's not on the ideal foot. If the world took a bit longer to go through but you had loads of interesting ways to do so, it's actually gameplay- if the world takes longer and nothing else is improved then I suppose it's more of (but not necessarily always) a punishment mechanic.

Just out of curiosity, how is that not a different playstyle? By not using a feature, which is usually heavily used, you are playing the game in a different style. It is a different style of playing by forcing you to traverse the land manually, instead of instantly teleporting. Different style of playing = different playstyle.
I didn't realise that could be a hard concept for someone to understand, but you can really call it whatever you want, playstyle was just the term I thought most easily summarised what I was trying to say lol.

@Op: I get you. I know what you're after and it really just boils down to self control rather than an actual developed systems.
I did a similar thing in Skyrim and Horizon Zero Dawn where I refused to use fast travel and the games were much more fun for it, in my opinion.
It works where you're derping around on your own, with no real rush to get anywhere...but again, it just simply doesn't need development resources.
...Rather, maybe you're looking for a social circle who has similar interests (RP maybe?), so you can travel around with like minded friends.
