The person who introduced me to FFXIV, their first piece of advice to me was "never sign up to Novice Network".
To be honest never needed it, never missed it.

The mount should be removed as a mentor specific reward, and players who already got it should keep it, in my opinion. An alternate means of attaining it can be made. It is quite obvious a large portion of mentors are only mentors for this, the faux "status" of the crown, NN chat, etc.
The mount is one big reason why many mentors despise getting extremes in the Mentor Roulette, and would rather get guildhests - the easier the duty the better. It shouldn't matter the content, mentorship is voluntary, nobody forced a "mentor" to become one, if they would rather shirk their duties as one, or go after a reward, they shouldn't be one in the first place, in my opinion.
That is probably the best advice one can give to a new player.

Mentors is kind of an idea that seems good on paper- like communism- but in practicality is poorly conceived mess. The vary nature of humanity means this idea won’t work…
(1) You provide a mount in game, no other way to get it, the people join for all wrong reasons. You should be a mentor to help not to exploit others.
(2) Most mentors are not very good at game- based of what I personally seen. The crown then puts further frustration and expectation on mentors, which is like adding fuel to a burning stove, it’s no wonder mentors often yell at sprouts
(3) Any one can be a mentor, even theoretically a 9 year old child. Regardless of how good one is in a game, being good does not mean one is a good teacher. Eg: I am a fencer IRL, I am a good fencer, but I would utterly loose my chill if I had to teach someone else. ‘Teaching a child is hard, even when dealing with a young and flexible mind…’ [Bioware, Kotor1]. SE can’t expect good performance for people who have no training in dealing with people.
(4) Sprout chat is very toxic and inappropriate. I have watched Zepha video about stories of mentors asking / tricking naive people who don’t know technology to give out their credit cards. Even on lighter cases. It is creepy and can prevent people from sticking with game.
(5): It takes away from exploration and learning by spoon feeding people, which results in them being unable to think on their own, and then whipe constantly in raids
You have options to hide chat ingame.. how could they harass you in a duty for 90min without a chat unless your saying attempting the content is harassment to a player who signed up for the roulette?
An no I said the mentor couldn't leave until one of those conditions are met.. they shouldn't be leaving till they're met anyways

1. Another mount reason lol. I didn't know mentoring was so black and white: its impossible for a mentor to be helpful while also aiming for the mount. Either they help for free and gain no compensation for their time or they are exploiting? What is your opinion on a person who gets paid to tutor a language or help others prepare for SATs?Mentors is kind of an idea that seems good on paper- like communism- but in practicality is poorly conceived mess. 2. This is subjective. Some think mentors should carry them through savage fights. Others expect an answer to the question "where is the level 45 quest starts?" in 5 seconds or they suck.
3. Mentors are not customer service representatives or GMs. Why would they need training in dealing with people?
4. I don't follow. You heard a story of a mentor scamming someone? Therefore all mentors are scammers? That person should be reported as a player, not as an entire system.
5. Wait so you want mentors to be helpful, but not too helpful?
When I was running Mentor roulette - purely for the Astrope mount, mind you - a vast majority of my fellow mentors were running it for similar reasons.
I can count on my hand mentors who did it purely for fun - as I was talkative with my peers.
The very moment they got their mounts they vanished from the roulette.
I also threw away my crown at the first possible opportunity as soon as I got my whistle.
Would I have become a mentor without the mount? Nah, fam.
It's an ugly icon that has a bad rep behind it. I don't need an icon to advise - nor do I need a fancy chat that usually only really offers information you can easily google.

Holding someone captive in an instance is harassment by any definition. It's somewhat common in Mobas. Also if this change was implemented, people would try harder to find a way out of it. Forcing the game closed is often a go to strategy. Additionally you defined the rules for Mentors being allowed to leave as "they are the last on there" which instantly doesn't work if there is two or more mentors present. You have options to hide chat ingame.. how could they harass you in a duty for 90min without a chat unless your saying attempting the content is harassment to a player who signed up for the roulette?

Can we just delete NN for NA and leave it for EU? I've only seen good things in both data centres (except that time when rmt tricked someone to invite them).

While not what I'd consider bad advice, I'd rather players make that decision on their own. Some people really enjoy the social aspect of NN, and it provides them a home away from home until they find an FC. Not to mention NN can actually help players find a social FC.
Is it as good as a custom-fit FC? Not always, but this varies by server.
Is a cherry-picked video of the worst of NN indicative of NN as a whole? Not really, but that also depends on your server. Once again, players are expecting the mentor system to do more than it's intended to do, and that's not the system's fault.
