I mean people say the whole sticks and stones thing, but the same people tend to have mental breakdowns very easily themselves.
Obviously to some extent that is true but a lot of people take that and try to justify just being a jerk.
It's always funny to see the same politicans and people in clips who get a raging hard-on about free speech and then in the next breath wants to ban flag burning and throw people in jail or even execute them because of it.
Or who wants to force kids to say the pledge of allegiance etc.
I have a hard time believing that you can get one year or a fine for an insult in Germany tho...
Maybe if we're talking about hate speech but we're getting into territory at that point where you run into issues in NA too.
Free speech is not absolute in NA either, you can't yell '' fire '' in a cinema and you can get punished in other ways if you yell racist things in public.
Even if they don't punish you for speech they can still punish you for disorderly conduct or something, same with harassment and threats that's still a free speech issue and it's still limited.
Generally speaking tho I do agree that whenever I see people talk about free speech in the context of NA it tends to be to defend maniacs and people being garbage.
Like I get it in principle, but at the same time some people are actually a legit danger to society and lead to actual harm.
I don't want to get into current specifics to derail and cause more arguments but there are people who have a lot of blood on their hands and I am not particularly interested in defending their right to continue causing harm.
Edit: Also for all of this talk about free speech NA does a lot of censoring and controlling of speech due to corporate interests.
Moreso than most countries.
I mean it's still a limitation of free speech and I'd say that NA companies are some of the most restrictive in the developed world that control the creators the most.
And it even affects foreign companies too that wants to do business in NA.
