Why do all U/U items sell for 1 gil?

1. You can't put something up for repair unless it's damaged.
2. Putting it in your retainer would be even slower than just trading it at the GC's HQ for GC seals.
3. Doesn't even address the issue, just a work-around at best.

Well yes, but..

1) If it's sitting on 100% then it's not your "prized" piece of gear that you're afraid to lose.
2) Putting it on your retainer involves going to the exact same zone line as getting the certificate could... and talking to an NPC... Or if you're a Twin Adder or Maelstrom member, getting a certificate would actually take longer because you'd have to fly to Grid or LL, as opposed to just entering the Ul'dah Market Wards.

Also, you're saying that putting a gear piece on your retainer would take just as long as trading it in? I think you missed the point of the post you quoted earlier... The problem was that, if you traded in your "prized" piece, you might have horrid luck and never have it replaced. If it's your prized piece, wouldn't you be willing to go through the extra ten seconds of effort to keep it safe? o.0

I'm not sure exactly what problem you forsee. ^^; That you might have to take an extra trip to get seals instead of an NM drop? The post you to which you said "Yeah, this." proposed the certificates, which would take longer than putting it on your retainer...

But you're right, they're just workarounds. But if it's your "prized gear" you should be letting someone else in your party have it to keep, unless everyone has one that they use every day... With the retainer option, you obviously couldn't use your verdant scepter to get another one, but if you were using it, it wouldn't be at 100% and you could just request repairs.

@Asiaine: In this thread, I asked for a way to get rid of useless NM drops besides tossing them, and I got exactly what I wanted. ^^; I realize some of you read "We are giving you another way to farm seals! " but since it's in this thead, I get the feeling that you're missing at least part of point. If I had to get a certificate to convert my item upon drop, it wouldn't solve my issue unless you had the certificate for every piece of U/U gear in the game...

If my dear Elezen girl is coming from where I think she's coming from, then she's talking about turning gear into a certificate on the spot, a certificate that would be Untradeable with a x/99 stack or a key item of sorts. At least, that's how I look at it.

Not what I got.

Get a certificate from GC so that any time a second U/U item is dropped into your inventory it immediately gets transformed into seals rather than being lost.

However, what you suggested about duplicate items turning into certificates sounds much better. ^-^

However, what you suggested about duplicate items turning into certificates sounds like a much better alternative, so long as this doesn't apply to lesser open world NMs. ^^; Rukkirii did say "the Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak, Dzemael Darkhold and NMs," so combined with no quotas, this could turn Queen Bolete into 15 level 50s spamming to claim and the people who want Eternal Shade going home in tears. >.>

Well in the manner Rukkirii mentioned it, to add onto what I said anyways, I'd propose that either the amount of materia gained from open-world NM drops should be based some sort of demand&supply to make it detrimental to continuously trade the same item in to materia and/or since open-world NMs are not remotely instanced or dungeon-locked, ergo they're more easily accessible, then their drops should not qualify for items that can be instantaneously turned into materia.

Well in the manner Rukkirii mentioned it, to add onto what I said anyways, I'd propose that the amount of materia gained from open-world NM drops should either be based some sort of demand&supply to make it detrimental to continuously trade the same item in to materia and/or since open-world NMs are not remotely instanced or dungeon-locked, ergo they're more easily accessible, then their drops should not qualify for items that can be instantaneously turned into materia.

I actually ninja'd out that part of my post so you wouldn't think I was using that to argue with you. Because that could happen with or without the certificates. D=

Supply:demand would work, but eventually they'd just be worth (practically) nothing because I'm afraid people would just farm them until their value was at the minimum. If it reset (even just every time the server rests) people would just hold onto their items, spam-trading like the current system. Dungeon drops should have a set reward, since it takes the same amount of effort for each run. It's not really competitive in nature like open world NMs.

The lesser guys' drops are a hard question. It would make sense for them to be worth something, but measures have to be in place to prevent them from being "farmed" (maybe only 1-2 trades for each lesser NM item per character, ever?). Admittedly, they're up most of the time and only a few new players ever kill them, let alone camp them. However, I'm afraid I know too many people who would gladly farm mobs (esp Raptors...) at the expense of newer players.
